Serena Williams will make her injury comeback at the Rome International in May, organisers said.
The world number one has been given a wildcard as she was not on the original entry list for the tournament that runs from May 2-8.
It means that only US Open champion Kim Clijsters will be missing from the world's top 10 players.
Williams has not played since January due to a knee injury, but the Rome tournament will serve as a warm-up for a tilt at the French Open later in May.
The younger sister of Venus Williams has won on the Roman clay at the Foro Italico once before in 2002.
